Fabric & Care
  • 70% bamboo viscose, 30% certified organic cotton T-shirt.
  • Garment dyed–due to the dip-dye process, some residual dye may come out in the first wash. Wash with like colours. Do not bleach.
  • Wash cool & hang dry. Washing hot and tumble drying will cause considerably more wear and increase the carbon footprint. Tumble dry low if necessary.
  • Cool iron if necessary. Don't iron over graphics.
  • Sustainably sourced and ethically produced.

Description

8Y8’s garment manufacturer was the first in the UK to become a member of the Fair Wear Foundation in 2006, an independent, non-profit organisation combating sweatshops and social injustice through internationally recognised standards and independent audits throughout the supply chain.

Learn more about the Fair Wear Foundation

The Global Organic Textile Standard is the world-leading textile processing standard for ecological and socially responsible textile production, backed up by independent certification of the entire supply chain. Guaranteeing living wages, without forced labour, child labour, or sweatshops, and a complete ban on the use of poisonous chemicals that could otherwise harm farmers, manufacturers, the environment, or you.

Certifying that both the production and processing of textiles meets strict organic standards, the Soil Association is leading the UK’s campaigning and certification of organic food and farming as part of the Global Organic Textile Standard. All harmful pesticides are banned along with harmful manufacturing chemicals, allergenic, carcinogenic and toxic chemicals.

Tested using a consistent benchmark formed on a scientific basis, the Oeko-Tex Standard certifies that products are completely free from any harmful chemicals, ensuring that textiles are safe to be in regular contact with the skin, assuring the safety of textiles and dyestuffs in both a human and ecological context.

The aim of the Organic Content Standard is to guarantee the traceability and integrity of materials, from the source to the finished T-shirt. Verifying the amount of organically sourced material via an accredited third party allows for transparent, consistent and comprehensive independent evaluation and verification of organic material content claims in the T-shirts.

Dip-dye bamboo T-shirt

These bamboo T-shirts completely redefine how comfortable a T-shirt can be. Using only the finest blend of organic cotton and sustainably sourced bamboo. It’s a first for 8Y8, but likely not the last. It’s a new take on the dip-dye design too, requiring each individual T-shirt to be meticulously dyed by hand in multiple stages to achieve a gradual fade from dark teal at the top, to the base grey bamboo T-shirt colour at the bottom. The subtle 8Y8 logo on the chest finishes it off, and with such attention to detail the end result is a perfectly fitting, timeless, eco-friendly bamboo T-shirt that’s fast becoming a favourite.

Why a bamboo T-shirt?

Bamboo is among the fastest growing plants on Earth, growing much more densely than cotton. Consequently the yield from a bamboo crop can often be much greater than that of a similar sized cotton field. Also, due to bamboo’s natural antibacterial agent it requires no pesticides, which together with flood and drought resistance makes for huge savings in resources and environmental impact.

Fabric woven from bamboo yarn is light and softer than the softest cotton. Other benefits include being naturally hypoallergenic, absorbent, fast drying, and naturally antibacterial, so will not hold odour. Bamboo’s thermo-regulating ability will also keep you warmer in the cold and cooler in the heat, out-performing cotton, hemp, wool, and synthetic materials.

As with cotton T-shirts, processing can negate the positive qualities of bamboo. That’s why 8Y8’s bamboo T-shirts carry Fair Wear Foundation and Oeko-Tex certification. That’s also why the dyes and inks used are water based. This ensures the most ethical, lowest environmental impact bamboo T-shirts possible. As with organic cotton, being a natural fibre means bamboo is also 100% biodegradable, so many years down the line when the T-shirts are eventually beyond repair, they can be returned to nourish the Earth.
